I don't understand it seems only a few weeks ago that I was enjoying Easter break and now I looked at the calendar and realized that the month of May had arrived with me even noticing it. As a girl the 1st of May was heralded with things like dancing around the maypole singing songs. My friends and I made small maypoles to take to school out flowers and ribbons and crowns to wear made out of blossom, bluebells and all the flowers we could find. Some years there would be the crowning of the May Queen. All in all it felt like summer was almost here.
I live in a corner of the South of England were nothing seems to be happpening. I got up on the 1st and went to school and it was a normal day, nothing, zilch, zero. Maybe I've got it wrong and the rest of the country is the same and the fun I had whilst growing up and also when my sons were young, no longer happens. I hope not! Or probably it's not allowed anymore as its not deemed politically correct or cancelled due to health and safety or come other stupid reason.
Woodlands Junior School have a fabulous website with an article on May Day.
"Round the Maypole, trit, trit, trot;
See what maypole we have got;
See what maypole we have got;

Shame isn't it when old traditions die out, I'm sure there is some group somewhere or other that is trying to bring it all back.
You're probably right, Rosie. Some jobsworth somewhere had decreed that it's dangerous to dance round a maypole because the poor little kiddiwinks might get tangled up in the ribbons or some such ridiculous reason. Cynical? Moi?
I am sure in the deepest, darkest recesses of my memory that I can remember dancing around a Maypole... I wish I could turn the clock back sometimes to an era when life was so much simpler and these innocent pastimes were the hightlight of our days..
